Electric parking brake

In contrast to cable-operated parking brake systems, electric parking brakes facilitate certain driver-support features such as hill start assist.

Overview

Apart from performing the basic vehicle holding function required of park brakes, the electric parking brake (EPB) systems provide other functions like an automatic release of the park brakes when the driver presses the accelerator or slips the clutch, and re-clamping using additional force on detection of vehicle motion. Further, the hill-hold function, which applies brakes to prevent roll-back when pulling away on a gradient, can also be implemented using the EPB.

Benefits

  • Scalability and interoperability
  • Highest design flexibility
  • Single source of chipset solution
  • Adaptability via software OTA
  • Easy design-in; fast time to market
  • Dependable quality and performance

About

We offer a broad range of interoperable and scalable product families to enable module design flexibility across the variations of OEM platforms, from fail-safe to fully redundant fail-operational and high-availability solutions.

Infineon has a proven track record as a quality supplier to the automotive industry. For many years, we have been developing a broad range of easy-to-design-in, scalable product families for the highest design flexibility. We now offer complete and cost-effective chipset solutions for safe and secure electric power steering, steer-by-wire, and hydraulic and electromechanical braking systems. This includes fail-safe as well as partially and fully redundant systems. With our proven track record, in-house expertise, application knowledge, and dependable solutions, we are the safety motor control partner.

We recognize that braking and steering are two of the most important safety functions of a vehicle, and we translate that into a system-level approach to functional safety with products that are ISO 26262 compliant and developed together to meet the strictest standards in safety and robustness.

With a proven track record and years of experience in the automotive sector, Infineon is the right partner for any electric power steering project. Our components have been designed and tested to ensure they work seamlessly and fulfill the highest-possible safety standards. Since our chipset is aligned in-house, you can count on its interoperability to ensure safety while reducing your development effort. Thanks to a small footprint and integrated features, our solution contributes to a lower BOM.

Furthermore, our chipset is suitable for OEMs who want to scale platform solutions across models to increase cost efficiency, from fail-safe to fully redundant fail-operational and high-availability solutions. Last but not least, there’s the peace of mind you gain knowing that all components are manufactured according to Infineon’s high automotive quality standards.

EPB is an electronically controlled parking brake, whereby the driver activates the holding mechanism with a button and the brake pads are electrically applied to the rear wheels. This is accomplished by an electronic control unit (ECU) and an actuator mechanism, as opposed to the traditional cable puller systems.

EPB systems are more convenient to use than traditional mechanical parking brakes. They can be engaged and disengaged with the push of a button, rather than having to manually pull up on a lever. This is more convenient and can be especially helpful in situations where the driver has limited mobility.

EPBs can help to improve safety by providing a more secure parking brake. They are less likely to be released accidentally than traditional mechanical parking brakes, and they can provide a more secure hold on the vehicle, especially on steep inclines.
